When the Israelites were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the sabbath day. – Numbers 15:32, NRSV
When I hear the word ‘Sabbath’, I cannot help but think of two things, creative work and rest. Like twins, they sit on a fence perfectly complementing the other.
Creative work is different from our common understanding of work, but I never see God engage in any other kind. It involves pleasure, choice, delight and that good kind of effort that looks forward to the specific task at hand.
The best example of this is creation. God showed us what creative work really is when He created the universe.
Pleasure.
Choice.
Delight.
He shows us the difference between this type of work and rest. He created for six days and He rested for one. On this one day there was no creation, no choosing to create, no delighting in a particular course of action that gave Him pleasure. He just rested in the afterglow of His creative work.
So, what if we defined Sabbath as the afterglow of attending to our specific kingdom work? It is a day of celebration, still wrapped up in pleasure, choice, and delight.
